Worker Killed at Highway 169 Construction Site

A construction worker was killed Monday after a large metal pipe became dislodged from a trailer and fell on him.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to KSTP, the accident occurred at a job site on the Highway 169 southbound ramp at the intersection with Londonderry Drive in Minnetonka.

David Earl Hyde, 38, was helping to unload the metal pipe from the trailer when the pipe fell on top of him. Other workers administered first aid as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

Unfortunately, Hyde was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified of the incident, and Hyde’s death remains under investigation.

Construction Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

4,836 workers were killed on the job in 2015. This averages to more than 93 deaths per week or more than 13 deaths each day.
4,379 of the recorded fatalities occurred in private industry and 937 were linked to construction.
Among the leading causes of death at construction sites were:
- Falls
- Struck by object
- Electrocutions
- Caught-in/between
