Hypertension & High Cholesterol
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood against your artery walls is high enough to cause severe health problems, such as heart attack and stroke. Sometimes symptoms of high blood pressure do not become apparent for years as it damages your heart and blood vessels. Sometimes symptoms never become apparent, even after a doctor reveals a high reading.
High cholesterol, or hypercholesterolemia, occurs when the fatty deposits develop in your blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis, a heart attack, or stroke. Poor diet, smoking, diabetes, and obesity are risk factors for high cholesterol. Many drugs are available to lower cholesterol levels, such as statins. Statins, such as Crestor and Zocor, block an enzyme that plays a role in cholesterol production.
