Ford Receives More than 1,600 Warranty Reports and 230 Complaints for Transmission Defects
According to documentation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission in certain Ford vehicles can degrade or even detach. This can prevent the vehicles from shifting into the intended gear.
As a result, a vehicle thought to have been shifted into “park” may actually be in a different gear, allowing it to roll away. This puts motorists and individuals around the vehicles at significant risk of collision, injury, and death.
Ford admitted to being aware of the problem, citing more than 1,600 warranty reports and 230 complaints about the problem. The automaker is also aware of at least four injury reports and six property damage claims related to the defect.
What Vehicles are Being Recalled by Ford?
Currently, the following vehicles are covered by the Ford transmission recall:
- 2013-2019 Ford Escapes
- 2013-2018 Ford C-Max
- 2013-2016 Ford Fusion
- 2015-2018 Ford Edge
- 2013-2021 Transit Connect
Ford Escapes currently account for 1.7 million of the vehicles recalled.
Be advised that the above list may not cover all vehicles affected by the transmission problem and additional model years and vehicle types may be added to the recall as more information is uncovered.
If you are unsure whether your Ford vehicle is part of the recall, you can check through the National Highway Transmission Safety Administration’s recall notification system.
Injuries Suffered in Rollaway Accidents
What is a rollaway accident? Rollaway accidents pose a unique hazard because they typically occur when the vehicle is assumed to be in “park”. Add to that the absence of a driver behind the wheel to take corrective action and you have a recipe for disaster.
Injuries suffered in rollaway accidents include:
- Crushing injuries
- Broken bones
- Vital organ injures
- Back injuries
- Head injuries
- Neck injuries
- Paralysis
- Death
