Ford Electric Power Steering Recall

Ford has issued a recall for 1.1 million vehicles due to a defect which can cause the vehicles to suddenly lose power steering. According to the auto maker, faulty sensors and defective electrical connections within the steering column could result in the loss of electric power steering assist while driving.

This Ford electric power steering problem can lead to loss of vehicle control and can increase the likelihood of a serious accident.

2011-2013 Ford Explorer Recall

According to the Ford recall release, a potential intermittent electrical connection in the steering gear of the 2011-2013 model year Ford Explorers may result in the loss of electric power steering assist while driving.
In 2013, Ford reportedly declined to issue a recall for 2011 Ford Explorers with the steering wheel defect, despite numerous complaints from drivers.

According to a June 2013 letter to U.S. regulators, an official at Ford stated that a loss of power steering “does not present an unreasonable safety risk in these vehicles.”

As of April 8, 2014, Ford had received reports of 15 low-speed accidents and two minor injuries believed to be associated with the defect.

2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Recall

According to the Ford recall release, 2008-2011 Ford Escapes and Mercury Mariners are equipped with a faulty sensor that could cause the power steering to malfunction and make the cars difficult to control.

A problem with the torque sensor in the steering column of the affected Escapes and Mariners may result in a loss of electric power steering assist, resulting in failure, while driving.

In an interview with Edmunds, Ford stated it had received reports of five accidents and six injuries alleged to be linked to the steering wheel defect.

In total, 1.1 million SUVs are being recalled due to the steering defect. Affected models include:

2008-2011 Ford Escape
2008-2011 Mercury Mariner
2011-2013 Ford Explorer
