Senators Push “Park it Now” Notice as Number of People Affected by GM Recall Grows
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (April 30, 2014) — Senators Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut are urging the Department of Transportation to issue a “Park It Now” order for 2.5 million General Motors vehicles recalled for defective ignitions. The senators both serve on a Congressional committee charged with investigating GM and their handling of the ignition switch recall.
In a letter to Department of Transportation secretary Anthony Foxx, the senators urge Foxx to issue the order, writing that “every day that unrepaired vehicles remain on the road increases the risk of more injuries, deaths and damage.” They are asking that all cars remain parked until repairs are complete, which may not be until October of 2014.
In April, Thomas J. Henry made a similar request to a federal judge in Texas. KEN FEINBERG WORKING WITH GM ON VICTIMS COMPENSATION FUND
The senators’ request comes at a time when GM is reportedly exploring the idea of setting up a victim compensation fund with the help of “pay czar” Ken Feinberg, who previously handled victim compensation for the 9/11 terrorist attacks, BP oil spill, and Boston Marathon bombings.
Thus far, GM has linked the recalled vehicles to 31 accidents and has only publicly recognized 13 death victims.
